# What does a furnace tune-up actually include?

**Short answer:** A real one is mostly safety and measurement: a combustion and carbon monoxide check, heat exchanger inspection, flame sensor cleaning, gas pressure and ignition testing, plus airflow and filter checks. It should take real time and end with numbers you can see. A $39 special that takes fifteen minutes is usually a sales call wearing a tune-up costume.

Fall is when every HVAC company in Kern County starts advertising furnace tune-ups, and the prices range from $39 to a few hundred dollars for something described in nearly identical words. Here is what the work actually is, so you can tell them apart.

**The safety half, which is the part that matters most.** A gas furnace burns fuel a few feet from the air your family breathes, so a tune-up is first an inspection:

- Combustion analysis with a meter and a carbon monoxide measurement
- Heat exchanger inspection, because a cracked one can put combustion gases into your air and is the one finding that ends with "replace, do not repair"
- Flame sensor cleaned and tested, the single most common no-heat failure
- Ignition system, gas valve, pressure switch, and limit switch tested
- Venting checked for blockage and proper draft

**The performance half.** Airflow is where most comfort problems actually live: filter condition and size, blower and inducer motor inspection, temperature rise measured against the manufacturer's range on the data plate, and a look at the ducts if rooms are uneven.
