Can HVAC companies fake their online reviews?

Here is a number that should bother you: a large local HVAC outfit can carry 4.4 stars across hundreds of Google reviews and a 2.6 on the Better Business Bureau at the same time, same company, same year. That gap is not an accident. It is a filter.

How the filter works. A lot of shops run review funnel software at the end of a job. It asks the customer how things went. Say you had a great experience, and it hands you a one tap link straight to Google or Yelp. Say you were unhappy, and it routes you to a private internal complaint form that goes to the office and never appears in public. Happy voices get amplified, unhappy voices get absorbed, and the public star rating slowly detaches from reality.

The tell, and how to read around it. Compare a company’s public star rating to its score on a site the funnel cannot control, the BBB customer reviews being the easy one. A wide gap between the two is the fingerprint of gating. Then read the one and two star reviews directly and check the dates. A cluster of recent complaints about the same thing, pricing, pressure, a botched install, tells you far more than the headline number does.

What we do instead. We do not gate. Every customer gets the same public review link whether the visit went perfectly or not, which is the only version of a rating that means anything. Our count is smaller because we started in 2025, and it is real, all of it, sitting at 5.0 because the work earned it, not because the unhappy notes were filed somewhere you cannot see.

A star rating you cannot audit is a billboard. A rating anyone can pull apart, one review at a time, dates and all, is evidence. Learn to tell the two apart before you hand someone your house.
