Heating in Tehachapi, Frazier Park, and Lake Isabella

Mountain homes are colder than the valley floor, often run on propane, and above 2,000 feet a gas furnace has to be set up for the altitude. Tehachapi sits near 3,970 feet and Frazier Park near 4,640. Why altitude matters to a furnace

Air gets thinner as you climb, so there is less oxygen in every breath a burner takes. The National Fuel Gas Code treats gas appliance ratings as good only up to 2,000 feet. Above that, the furnace has to be adjusted following the manufacturer's high-altitude instructions, which set the exact change for each model.

Here is where our mountain towns sit:

  • Frazier Park: about 4,640 feet, well above the line
  • Tehachapi: about 3,970 feet, well above the line
  • Lake Isabella: about 2,510 feet, just past it, so the adjustment is small

A furnace that was never adjusted runs rich. It burns more fuel than it needs to, soots up faster, and can put out more carbon monoxide than it should. It is one of the first things we check on a mountain call, and on every new install the elevation goes on the written quote.

Propane, and why the conversion gets checked

Plenty of homes up here are past the natural gas lines and run on propane. Most gas furnaces ship set up for natural gas, so running one on propane takes the manufacturer's LP conversion kit, installed and then checked with the burner running. A furnace that was converted halfway, or converted without the altitude adjustment, can light and run and still be wrong. We check both.

Heat pumps in the mountains

A heat pump can heat a mountain home well if it is picked for cold weather instead of copied from a valley install. The backup plan matters more up here, because the coldest nights are exactly when a heat pump leans hardest on backup heat. If your home runs on solar and batteries, electric backup heat is a big load for them to carry, and keeping propane as the backup fuel is often the smarter setup. Does a furnace in Tehachapi need to be set up differently than one in Bakersfield?
